Sanjay Singh appears in court in Ludhiana.

Sanjay Singh, an AAP leader and Rajya Sabha member, appeared in court on Tuesday in a defamation lawsuit. The lawsuit had been filed by Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia.

After he failed to appear in court on Monday, the court issued an arrest order for the Aam Aadmi Party leader.

He appeared at Chief Judicial Magistrate Harsimran Singh’s court in Ludhiana.

Singh told reporters outside the court on Tuesday that his grandfather’s tehrvin (thirteenth day of grief after a person’s death) prevented him from appearing in court on Monday.

Singh was given bail when the judge heard him, he added.

In 2016, Majithia filed a defamation suit against Singh for allegedly making a defamatory allegation at a rally in 2015.
