India’s ‘Flying Sikh’ tested positive on May 19
Legendary sprinter Milkha Singh passed away on Friday, 18 June, due to COVID related complications. He was 91.
Singh breathed his last at 11:30 PM on Friday in Chandigarh’s premier medical institute Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
A distinguished athlete, Singh tested positive for the virus on 19 May. He along with his wife Nirmal Kaur, former Indian volleyball captain, are believed to have contracted the virus from a house help. Both were initially admitted to Fortis Hospital Mohali.
However, Milkha Singh got discharged and returned home on May 31st. But due to receding oxygen levels Singh was again hospitalized on June 3rd , this time at PGIMER.
Unfortunately Nirmal Kaur died after battling the virus for 19 days. She breathed her last on June 13th.
“He fought hard but God has his ways and it was perhaps true love and companionship that both our mother Nirmal ji and now Dad have passed away in a matter of five days. We are deeply indebted to the doctors at PGI for their valiant efforts and the love and prayers we received from across the world and from yourselves,” the family said in a statement.
The nation mourned the death of the legendary athlete and paid tribute to the departed soul.
