Monsoon finally leaves North India, Punjab experiences a deficit by 4.2 per cent!

The monsoon season in north India has come to an end for the year, with an inadequate note and virtually half-empty dams. While rain was scarce in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh over the extended season, it was abundant in Haryana.

Rainfall in Haryana was 31.3 percent above the long-term normal. On the other hand, it was 4.2 percent below the long-term average in Punjab and 9.4 percent below the long-term average in Himachal, according to statistics collated by IMD from June 1, 2021 to October 8, 2021.

The condition of the region’s major dams is dire, with reservoir storage levels far below full capacity or even the 10-year average.

According to figures issued on October 7 by the Central Water Commission (CWC), present water level at Thein Dam on the Ravi in Punjab is only 43% of its complete capacity, compared to a 10-year average of 73%.
