L.A, New York schools get threatening emails! Abundance of caution needed felt some
Threatening emails scared the daylights out of two largest school districts in U.S, as they were targeted at the safety of thousands of students. The mails specified that an aggressive and life threatening plan of violence was being planned and was already set into action. Would these schools see bombs and guns inside the classrooms?
But the officials of New York City decided to open the doors of their public schools at the same time on Tuesday and called the threatening emails a hoax. They speculated that the mails seemed to be inspired by a popular television serial. In L.A things were handled differently, Superintendent Ramon Cortines closed each school that came in his district and ended up disrupting the normal routine of about 640,000 students and also had their families deeply concerned.
The world maybe seeing terrorism from close quarters in the recent days, and people are surely petrified with this aggression. But was this “extra careful” move justified? Cortines , felt so and commented “I, as superintendent, am not going to take a chance with the life of a student,” he stated at a conference. The L.A officials investigated the matter and declared the schools to open by Wednesday as the mails were safe.
The school system of New York is massive and enrolls about 1 million students and is spread out over 300 square miles. The Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio (D) was not too happy about the stance taken up by Los Angeles officials’ decision and calling it an overreaction, he stated that he had no plans to admit panic to people who had rendered the false threats.
He claimed that “As leaders, it is our job to protect public order and keep things moving forward in this city,” he said at a news conference. He further asserted “This is not a credible threat and is not something we are concerned with. What we are concerned with is overreacting to it. We will stay aware, we will stay involved, but at all costs cannot start overreacting to what will probably be a series of copycat-type initiatives.”
To this the Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck stated that it was irresponsible criticism of their decision as safety of kids was priority. The Monday emails had the officials take the threat seriously as the mail involved assault rifles, explosive devices and machine pistols. The incident may be a spoof or it may be a testing challenge for the Police remained to be seen and L.A received the threats hours before New York got them and an instant reaction was needed as the threats may be real.
At the moment a global investigation is being carried out into the Tashfeen Malik and Syed who were involved in the Dec 2nd killings and the terror threat had the area in jitters again. Its better being safe than sorry felt many and they were saddened at the violent exposure their kids were facing in today’s times.
