Neonatal, maternal tetanus eliminated! WHO says India ‘Yaws free’

yaws-mainIndia has finally got its “maternal and neonatal tetanus free” certificate by WHO, the World Health Organisation. These certificates were handed over to India by the WHO representatives at an event held in Delhi, the capital city of the country.

According to the Regional Director of World Health Organization South-East Asia Region, Poonam Khetrapal Singh, “India’s focused approach on making maternal and newborn care accessible to all and addressing health care equity more generally has made these remarkable successes possible. These victories are not only India’s but all of humanity’s as the country accounts for approximately one-sixth of the world’s population.”

According to her statement the “neonatal and maternal tetanus free” status, was obtained with the present health workforce and the existing health system. India has now been certified with “elimination of yaws, maternal and neonatal tetanus”, by the World Health Organization.

India can finally wallow in the “Yaws free” certification this May. This WHO certification has been handed out after careful scrutiny of data by a team of experts who studied the graph of the disease spread and its transmission, and confirmed its interruption. In 2015, India earned the label of “maternal and neonatal tetanus free” country.
