NEW RULE! 60:40 Weightage for IIT JEE Admissions Scrapped!
Good news for JEE Aspirants! The Joint Entrance Examination Apex Board (JAB) which regulates admission process in the 31 National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur, IIITs and Government Technology Institutes has scrapped the existing 60/40 weightage formula with effect from 2017.
As per the new rules students vying for seats in these prestigious institutes will have to secure a minimum of 75% marks in Higher Secondary (HS) examination or rank among top 20 percentile in their respective board. Apart from the rank secured in the entrance exam, this will be the minimum criteria to qualify for a seat.
The IITs and ISM Dhanbad will adopt the same norms and a student can clinch a seat through counseling only after meeting the cut-offs. A circular has been issued to notify the qualifying rules.
“The HRD ministry has given the nod to the JAB proposal. The JEE Main rank will now depend on the new criteria. If students fail to meet the HS score cutoff, their entrance test rank will be nullified,” an NIT director said.
Until now, the minimum criteria were to pass in all subjects in higher secondary with at least 45% marks in each subject followed by a written exam. The 60-40 weightage given to JEE Main score and class 12th score was introduced in 2012, when the two tier exam of JEE Main and JEE Advanced began. This will not be applicable from 2017.
The current system is criticised by both parents and the teaching facility over alleged discrepancy due to high weightage on board results. Some of the deserving candidates lost out on their merit seat due to this.
According to an NIT director who is also the member JAB,”We will decide if the institutes -NITs, IIITs, GTIs and IIEST–will admit students from IIT-JEE (Advanced) or there will be another test. For now, JEE Main is unlikely to be scrapped as many state institutes use the ranks. By 2017-end, a decision will be taken.”
“We need a full-proof mechanism that can happen through a single test,” an official said. JAB is likely to soon take a call on this issue soon.
