More deaths, more worry, Dengue death toll rises to 14
Shocking and still uncontrollable, dengue surges ahead as the death toll reaches 14 in Delhi. Nearly 1900 people have been taken down ill by dengue and things are turning bad as reports of three more people succumbing to the deadly vector-borne disease have been reported. We can now categorize this year as the worst dengue outbreak in the last five years.
Wednesday reports have confirmed that three more people have died, a 41-year-old woman and two small boys, aged 14 years and 7 years , leaving Delhi in a mosquito terror. The mad rush of the patients to the hospitals needs to be controlled and it is not an easy job for the Government run hospitals. There are limited beds and the TV channels have reported a number of times that 3-4 people are lying on the same bed for treatment.
News reports say that the Government was miffed at the private hospitals for denying treatment to the dengue patients and has threatened them that their licenses may be reverted if they send people back without treatment. The authorities are offering free dengue tests for the people in State run hospitals , and has asked the private hospitals to take just about Rs 600 for testing dengue.
There is a desperate need for more beds and seeing this, the Government has asked the private hospitals to hire more medical staff, doctors, paramedics and nurses and has also ordered them to supplement about 1000 beds by Sunday. Satyendar Jain , the Delhi Health Minister has announced that even if hospitals do not have adequate beds they still have to offer proper treatment and medical stabilization to the suffering patients.
According to the IMA, they request the people to maintain a calm and have admitted that the present dengue virus is less fatal as compared to the virus type that was detected in 2013. He has requested people not to rush to hospitals for admission unless absolutely necessary. Secretary General KK Aggarwal of the Indian Medical association has appealed to the public There is no need of platelets transfusion unless a patient has active bleed and count of less than 10,000. An emergency takeover of the hospitals by the Government is also suspected in future in case of an exigency.
The anti corruption helpline set up by the Government, 1031 has also been roped in as a dengue helpline. Kids have been asked to wear full sleeves shirts, trousers, salwar suits for the next couple of weeks. Dengue. The break bone fever starts to peak after the monsoons end and the mosquito is usually active in October leading to the severe illness.
