‘Azhar’ is the untold story of a famous man who has journeyed through the world of cricket and Bollywood. The rise and rapid fall of one time skipper Mohammed Azharuddin is the highlight of the entertaining “biopic”. Azhar was one of the most controversial and appreciated captain of the Indian Cricket team and then he fell in love with the model turned actress friend Sangeeta Bijlani and braved all odds to marry her. This was the most notorious love stories recorded ever and the “then captain” had to battle a lot of grey stories and allegations off his shoulders.
Azhar, the sports drama, is all about cricket, love, betrayal and the most talked about “match fixing” and subsequent court battles involving the allegations. Azhar cannot be termed as a biopic of the “then” Indian skipper Azharuddin rather it is an entertainer that has been dramatized for the audiences.
Emraan Hashmi portrays the character of Azharudin who belongs to Hyderabad, and knocks the ball superbly on the cricket field, to turn skipper of the Indian cricket team. He ends up jeopardizing his reputation and marriage to Naureen ( Prachi Desai) by running after Sangeeta Bijlani, played by Nargis Fakri. The flick shows his childhood, achievements, and tenure as a captain, his romantic interludes and his involvement in the match fixing scandal and the subsequent wrath of the International Cricket Council and Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The movie also mentions “some” other stars of the game by their first names, and this may definitely point a finger to some hidden stories, that could unfurl to the disgust of others.
