Bangladesh cyclone ‘Roanu’ causes destruction! 24 dead , 100 injured

cycloneA raging cyclone hit Bangladesh with a speed of 88 km/hr, and it hit the area of Barisal-Chittagong, leaving the whole country disturbed and shaken. The rain triggered landslides, floods and uncontrollable winds that have caused about 24 deaths and 100 injuries, say reports.

The Cyclone Roanu that hit the Southern Coast of Bangladesh on Saturday has spread destruction and about 24 people have been reported dead and nearly 100 are injured. Half a million people have run away from their homes for the sake of safety and reports say that nearly 500,000 people have relocated to shelters because of the scary landfalls, landslides and flooding. The destructive Roanu has caused a wind speed of almost 88 km/hr and the cyclonic conditions have left families of the 24 dead people bereaved.

The cyclone made landfall around midday on Saturday ( the GMT timing recorded at about 0600), and people said that cyclonic and packing winds that zoomed across at a speed of 88 kilometres per hour in the Southern districts. The raging winds and rain managed to destroy houses prepared out of mud and tin in the region. Low lying villages were shaken by a storm surge that rose up to a huge two meters or seven feet high, shaking the onlookers with fright. People from Chittagong port city and the areas are being evacuated as the authorities expect the hilly regions to be damaged more by landslides, if it continues to rain so heavily.

According to a news report, the damage caused by the cyclone may have actually been much worse than perceived and Tavir Chowdhary a reporter from Al Jazeera, Dhaka, stated “That toll could rise because a lot of people who live in the remote coastal islands are fishermen and farmers,” he added, explaining that authorities will not be able to access these areas until late on Saturday or Sunday. The real impact can be seen tomorrow when we visit these islands and see how many people are missing.”

In a news conference, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, the Disaster Management and Relief Minister have confirmed “We’ve shifted most of the people who are vulnerable. All-out preparations are in place to tackle the damage.”
