Illegal Kidney transplant racket at Apollo! Kinpin arrested
Last week, the country was left shocked when reports regarding a reputed and famous hospital like Apollo Indraprastha revealed that there were “staff” people there, dealing in illegal kidney transplants.
Personal secretaries attached to a senior nephrologist, told the police that they were involved in the kidney racket and used to convince a donor to donate his or her kidney. The recipient was brought to the hospital posing as a relative. These transplants used to get approval by the committee appointed by the hospital and no external scrutiny was ordered into the case.
Reports are speculating that it is not possible to carry out this operation smoothly without internal help and at least one member of the committee has to be involved in this scam because almost all transplants, under the “conmen planning”, got the approval of the committee. Now the alleged kingpin, 40 year old T. Rajkumar Rao has been arrested from Raharhat in Bengal, and the cops have managed to apprehend three more involved men.
Apollo Indraprastha Hospital has announced stringent steps to “strengthen” internal procedures to take care of this. Sale of organs is punishable under the Indian Laws and the law permits, only children, parents or siblings to “donate their organs”. The Police have uncovered five illegal transplants that were carried out and nearly 5 people have been arrested for facilitating these gross acts.
Aditya Singh and Shailesh Saxena are said to be a part of the racket and the touts are Satya Prakash ,Aseem Sikdar, and Devashish Moulik . These touts tampered with the identification proofs of the recipients and donors, and then the papers were handed over to the committee for approval. The hospital declares that the two members were “secretarial staff of the doctors and not hospital employees.”
About ten doctors, some of whom are from Apollo Hospital, are going to be scrutinized by the Police regarding this, say reports. These doctors are members of the committee that had been held responsible for approval of the organ transplant surgery. The forged documents regarding the organ transplant had obtained the authorization for transplant after careful perusal of the committee. The hospital has announced that it is the “victim of a well orchestrated” operation and has decided to perk up vigilance regarding its internal procedures to prevent such actions in the future. A panel has also been set up for the probe.
Rao will be brought to Delhi after he is taken to a Bengal court for a transit remand to the Capital.
