Terrifying cloudbursts! Uttarakhand landslides kill 29, 15 missing

Uttarakhand has been taken in by rainy fury and nearly 29 people have been killed and about 15 are missing in floody cloudbursts. Scary cloudbursts and heavy rains have led to landslides in many areas of Uttarakhand.

Remember the deadly floods in Uttarakhand which had destroyed almost 6000 people about 3 years ago? There are many people missing in the Didihat area where there were reports of torrential rain and nearly 6 houses caved in because of the mudslides and heavy rains. Almost 11 people, which included 3 kids, have died in the Pithoragarh district. The officials stated that in the areas, “More than 100 mm rains were recorded in just two hours, leading to flooding of most of the rivers in the hill state”.

The stormy weather is not permitting complete rescue operations in the rain affected areas, stated a senior at the disaster management team. OP Singh, Director General of the NDRF stated “Heavy rains caused landslides last night. Our teams are facing difficulty in rescue work due to blocked roads and low visibility.”Along with the armed forces and ITBP, about four teams of the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF, have been involved in rescue efforts.

Officials have confirmed that nearly 108 personnel of ITBP were involved in the Pithoragarh rescue operations and about 7 dead bodies have been recovered from the area and the region has “no connectivity”. According to a senior cop who has been managing the rescue operations, “The information we have got from a local there is that the situation is very grim. Disaster response teams have left from Almora and Dharchula to assist in relief and rescue in the region,” he stated. A compensation of about 2 lakhs has been announced for the families of the victims confirmed Harish Rawat, the Chief Minister who is “personally monitoring the situation”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered condolences to the bereaved families “I am grieved by the loss of lives caused due to cloudburst and heavy rain in parts of Uttarakhand. Condolences to bereaved families,” he tweeted. There is a 72 hour warning issued by thefloodsas the area is experiencing incessant rainfall since last night. The danger areas include 7 districts of Kumaon and Garhwal region. June 2013, had seen devastation in the area because of these natural disasters. Floods had swiped away hundreds of towns and villages and left about 6000 people dead
