No ‘Unity’ In Diversity! Dalits Forbidden to Enter Temple in Tamil Nadu
Dalit intolerance has struck India again! The shocking news came from Tamil Nadu village named Pazhangkallimedu and Nagapalli, where around 250 Dalit families were debarred from entering the temple. The targeted families have reportedly threatened to take on Islam as their religion if the conditions remain unchanged.
As per Indian Express reports, 180 Dalits wanted to perform rituals during a five-day local festival in the temple, but their plea was turned down by the upper caste Hindus.
A few local residents have confirmed that at least 6 of the victims have converted to Islam, and more were thinking on the same lines if their request is not entertained. Members of Tamil Nadu Towheed Jamaat have also dispersed copies of Quran in the village.
Social media went berserk after the news surfaced with many calling for strict action to be taken against the offenders.
Senthil Kumar, leader of the Dalit party VCK stated, “We want to perform Mandagapadi, or lead the rituals, on one of the five days of the annual temple festival. But we are denied that right. My parents and grandparents were slaves. I wish my generation does not have to face untouchability and insults. Conversion may be the only option for us.”
A similar situation prevailed in the Nagapalli village where around 70 Dalits voiced concerns over minority intolerance and expressed a desire embrace Islam.
This is not the first case of Dalit prejudice nor will it be the last. Recently, in a heinous act, several Dalits were beaten up by Gau Rakshaks for allegedly skinning a dead cow.
Coming to the latest Tamil Nadu incident, we wonder what new twist it will take? Will the Dalits be allowed to worship in the temple or not? Let’s wait and watch!
