Punjab: NCW’s leader asks for CM Channi’s resignation

Rekha Sharma, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), has asked the newly appointed Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to quit over the “#MeToo” allegations put against him.

Sharma said in a statement that the appointment of such a person as Punjab’s chief minister was “shameful.”

She claimed that the incident was reported to the Punjab State Commission for Women, but there was no action taken against it.

This issue had come into the highlights again back in the month of May this year when the head of the Punjab women’s panel threatened to go on hunger strike if the state government did not inform her of its position on the “inappropriate text” message reportedly sent by Channi to the female IAS officer back in 2018.  During that time Channi held the position of a Minister in the Amarinder Singh Government.

Manisha Gulati, the head of the Punjab Women Commission, said she had written to the chief secretary requesting a report on the government’s actions in this case.
