China floods create havoc! 225 suspected dead, 250,000 trapped
China has been bent double under the wrath of the rains. Reports confirm that almost 225 have been killed or are missing in the torrential rains in China. Reports have come in stating that nearly 200,000 people are displaced in
because of the flash floods and landslides.
Hundreds are reported dead or missing in the recent China floods that are a result of pouring rains. Almost 250,000 people are feared trapped. To offer help the authorities have organized more than 500 soldiers, 62 speedboats and about 1000 people to offer their services for rescue work. The river banks are being closely monitored and about 10,000 people have been deployed to ensure river bank safety.
The flood news from July 18th to 20th has paralyzed the whole country as it has traumatized about 680,000 people and 10 townships which could not bear the onslaught of rains and were swamped .
According to the Xinhua news agency ,” Over 500 soldiers, 1,000 people and 62 speedboats have been sent for rescue work while more than 10,000 people have been sent to ensure the safety of river banks. At least 114 people have been killed and 111 others missing in Hubei province. Local authorities have evacuated nearly 3.10 lakh people.”
This is not all, about 52,900 houses have collapsed and 155,000 lie in a damaged state. More than 70,000 hectares of crops lie destroyed and losses of almost over 16 billion Yuan (USD 2.4 billion) are reported.
The raging water of the floods are said to have gushed over the river banks submerging almost 12 villages. Daxian Village of Xingtai City, is the worst hit and it reports nearly 8 villagers dead and about 1 missing. This includes about 5 school kids stated the dailies.
According to a local villager, Zhang Erqiang, “I heard people yelling ‘flood’ at about 2:30 AM. I woke up my wife and children and rushed out of door immediately. In no time the water level was above my waist. My wife and I panicked and we climbed to a tree, and stayed there for several hours until rescuers arrived in the morning, but our daughter and son were washed away and their bodies were just found.” Most of the residents have gone here and there for shelter while about a dozen have stayed back.
Communication disruptions, road closures, power outrages, and other infrastructural damages across Jingxing are a source of great concern. People had barely finished hearing the flood broadcast and were astonished at the speed with which the raging torrential flood water took over their homes.
