Hospitals refuse dengue patients admission, Will they lose license?
Dengue crisis upsets the Chief Minister too and promoted him into action, after announcing fumigation at the earliest, now comes the time of surprise visits to different hospitals for scrutiny. Surprise inspections on Tuesday, carried out by Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister, to different State-run hospitals, has been very upsetting. It seems that a large number of hospitals in Delhi were refusing proper treatment to the Dengue patients. Will these hospitals lose their license to practice medicine?
Two children have succumbed to death because of dengue and this has caused an outrage in the public. It is stated that the hospitals had refused treatment to these innocent kids raging with dengue fever and this callous behavior has led to action on the Governmental level. Delhi Government officials have announced that unless patients suffering from dengue are not provided treatment right away, they can revert back the practice license of the private hospitals.
Two children, 6 year old Aman Sharma and 7 year old Avinash Rout died because of lack of proper treatment from the city hospitals. Avinashs parents who were sent back from 5 hospitals, could not deal with the loss of their child and committed suicide by jumping off a 4 storey building. This extreme step of the parents flared the emotions of the people and led to a huge public outcry.
The Delhi Government was jostled into action and Kejriwal immediately visited the state run hospitals without informing them. He went to Dr Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan in Karkardooma and Guru Teg Bahadur hospital among others, and gave a statement to the media saying, “We have become blind in the race to make more and more profit. We shouldn’t forget our humanity.”
He also stated that hospitals refusing emergency treatment to dengue patients will be penalized in future. We are planning to come out with a law so that hospitals refusing treatment to an emergency patient can be penalized. In the next couple of days, we will call a special session of the Legislative Assembly to bring in the law, stated the upset Chief Minister of Delhi. Hospitals which refuse treatment will not be spared, said a furious Kejriwal.
The Government is also planning a corrective action and may take over the private hospitals during an emergency, but only for a temporary period. Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain, plans to hold a meeting with the private hospital administrators to discuss the issue. 1800 sick patients and almost 11 deaths due to dengue have gripped the National capital in the throes of fear!
