Psychiatric symptoms? It may be a brain tumor

Experiencing hallucinations, anodeprexia mania, depression, anxiety disorders, and mania? It may be because of a brain tumor, say the researchers, which may be present without any neurological signs. This was speculated when doctors were trying to treat a woman for depression, but she was not responding. Treatment resistant depression, may be one of the symptoms of brain tumor suggest researchers.

An article in the BMJ Case Reports stated that Researchers found out that a woman who was 54 years of age was having symptoms of depression and even besides taking fluoxetine ( anti depressant treatment) and bromazepam(anti-anxiety treatment) for nearly 5 months, the treatment had to be stopped because of its ineffectiveness . The lady was facing decision making difficulties and could not initiate an action. She was facing sleep disorders, attention problems and concentration hassles along with apathy. Suicidal thoughts, job difficulties, self accusatory behavior and a distancing from hobby chores were also symptoms that were concerning the doctors.

A neurologically clear examination and further investigations made the medical fraternity go for the CT scan and the MRI of the brain, which showed that the lady had meningiomatosis with an enormous meningioma. In the left frontal lobe, the lady had a brain tumor that was benign. An emergency surgery was scheduled and within a month she recovered and the symptoms were no more to be seen, say the doctors.

Doctors advise that keeping in mind that it may “seems unrealistic to prescribe brain imaging in every patient with a depressive syndrome” but some patients need to get a brain scan to identify whether there is a tumor. A check up is advised if the patient starts to feel symptoms of depression after 50 years and if patient is apathetic and diagnosed with depression that resists treatment.
