‘Artificial Pancreas’ paired with smartphone will help teens with Type 1 Diabetes
Finally teens diagnosed with type 1 diabetes will able to rejoice soon! Researchers has been created an artificial pancreas for diabetes treatment that pairs with a smartphone to monitor blood sugar that will work much better for teens with type 1 diabetes.
The study has been confirmed by testing the artificial pancreas on a group of 12 young diabetics. The artificial pancreas implanted in the teens paired with a smartphone to monitor blood sugar and the technology worked efficiently, it lowers average blood sugar levels of 8.7 mmol/liter as compared to 10.1 mmol/liter. The technology could be beneficial for both elderly and young children but it may work better for teens with type 1 diabetes who need to take insulin injections every day to keep their glucose levels normal.
Dr. Roman Hovorka, lead author of the study and Director of research at the University of Cambridge Metabolic Research Laboratories in the U.K has stated that the present study adds knowledge about performance in teenagers who are particularly vulnerable to poor glucose control, home testing in very young children and elderly will follow. The application of the artificial pancreas is not limited by age but by the ability to use the insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor.”
According to a recent research, this cure for type 1 diabetes has taken a gigantic step forward with the discovery of an artificial pancreas. B.D. Colen, Harvard Staff Writer at Harvard Stem Cell Institute has stated,” It is believed that if implanted beta cells could be shielded from immune attack, and would respond to the body’s own signals for insulin, they would be likely to eliminate most, or even all, the complications of the disease, and would, in effect, serve as a cure.”
