Reports are coming in that the first day of three day Great Indian sale by Amazon, started on a sluggish tempo. The previous seasons had seen loads of sales but some rumor mongers have stated that the sales this time are sedate as compared to last year.
This is where Amazon disagrees, and reveals that according to its daily sales record of Monday, it has managed to sell a huge number of products from its India unit. The “great Indian sale” event is a much awaited sales offering for the people and they wait excitedly for announcements to be made regarding their discount sales, by this online shopping portal.
The company statement added that Amazon India sold “the first 100K units” at midnight. This was at the time that the commencement of the sale event was announced. Reports by Amazon have revealed that the products most in demand by the customers were Moto G4 Plus, Redmi Note 3, Samsung on7 Pro, Surf Excel Matic Top Load – 2 Kg, Mamy Poko Pant Style Large Size Diapers Extra absorb, Orpat Dry Iron and Panasonic TH 32 inches HD Ready LED TV. The statement by Amazon also confirmed that “Several small homegrown brands witnessed their highest ever sales today including YouBella, Decals Design, Sukkhi, Shining Diva, Meenaz, Indian Art Villa, Autofurnish, HNG Retail, Bean Factory and more.”
Government of India, this March, may have introduced some new guidelines for the online selling market places but this was not a deterrent for sales events announced by Myntra, Amazon and Flipkart. Amazon has offered discounts of about 20-70% on an assortment of product range, but this was restricted to the less popular brands.
This was a surprise after the recently introduced DIPP guidelines and FDI rules stating that companies dealing with e-commerce are not permitted to offer heady discounts to influence sales of goods. An official from Amazon has given a statement on the basis of anonymity quoted to the Reuters, “We are not violating the DIPP guidelines by offering discounts on products. We are only using this as an opportunity to promote the brand and the portal in the country.”
According to Harish H V, Partner at Grant Thornton’s statement, “We feel that the government should not interfere in such matters. If they keep restricting (discounts and offers), there’s no end to it and companies will keep finding loopholes. For instance, if it is physical retail-the companies have to put up a store, furnish it, decorate, advertise and do promotional activities to attract customers. That is the cost of acquisition for them. Similarly e-commerce players do it by way of offering discounts.”
