How is India’s vaccination drive going?

On the 111th day, India had the lowest number of covid cases at 37,800.

People in India are getting vaccines-covaxin and covisheild, which are manufactured in India. Sputnik V was also brought in from abroad, although only in limited numbers are being distributed.

The immunisation campaign began on January 16th. According to the health ministry, India has become the fastest country to vaccinate 14 crore people in just 99 days.

According to the 8 pm provisional report on Saturday, the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country is 140,802,794.

Health workers were the first to be vaccinated, as they are the ones who are more likely to get infected. In the initial phase, only health workers, those over the age of 60, and eventually people over 45 were eligible for vaccination.

Then India was hit by a second wave of covid, which turned into a nightmare. The vaccine campaign has expanded, and those over the age of 18 can now be immunised.

Fears that the third wave of COVID-19 would strike India shortly have fueled calls for a more aggressive vaccination campaign. The administration attempted to emphasise last week that India had given out more vaccination doses than the United States. However, the total number of doses administered does not tell the whole picture about how successfully India’s immunisation campaign is doing.

India has given out over 35 million vaccination doses, with 6.4 million of those being second doses. So far, the country has received three vaccines: Covishield, COVAXIN, and Sputnik V. Only 30.2 percent of those who are eligible have received their first dose, while 6.65 percent have received all two doses.

Vaccine dissemination has been severely lacking. Some cities have an abundance of vaccines, while others have none.

For example, 90 percent of residents in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, received at least one dose, whereas only 9% of people in Raebareli received one dose. The difference between Tiruvannamalai and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, ranges from 15% to 61 percent.

The study also discovered a vaccine discrepancy between men and women. In J&K, the proportion of men immunised to women vaccinated was 57:43. A considerable gender discrepancy was also noted in Delhi (61:50), Odisha (44:34), and Madhya Pradesh (43:36).

UP came ranked bottom in terms of immunizations per million people, followed by Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Assam. Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat had the highest immunisation rates per million population among the more populous states.

Experts and doctors agree that the best way to combat covid19 and decrease the burden of the third wave in India is for the government to plan and distribute vaccines properly. Only conscientious behaviour and vaccination are effective against this disease.
