Social media ramps it up against eve-teasing

Kudos to the power of social media is what escapes the mouth! Once again we see the power of net exposure and this time it’s all because of a brave and courageous step taken by Jasleen Kaur, a resident of New Delhi. Jasleen, a Delhiite, was mercilessly teased by a man on the streets and the onlookers looked on in numb silence, without rushing to her assistance, but she had her magic wand in her hand- a camera phone!

Not the one to give up, Jasleen showed immense courage and took matters in her own hands and clicked pictures of the eve-teaser who was barking obscenities at her and challenging her to take action against him. Jasleen unable to bear his gory behavior, photographed him as he posed impudently challenging her, and posted his pictures on Facebook, the social media website. She begged help from her friends and acquaintances by asking them to make the picture viral by sharing it with their friends.

Jasleen was deeply disappointed by the onlookers who were almost 20 in number and saw that they stood unmoved enjoying the exchange between the two. She expected some action from the bystanders when she picked her smartphone to click a picture of the alleged culprit, but they stood dumbly refusing to step forward to help. Shame on you , human race, and kudos to inanimate objects like mobiles and social networks.

The accused was Sarvjeet Singh, who had teased Jasleen Kaur, an AAP supporter, and he states that it was a staged show to grab some fame. Singh who was apprehended by the Police was given bail on Monday night stated “I completely deny whatever allegations she has leveled. I never tried to threaten or abuse her. I did not want to break traffic rules and wanted to take a left for which I needed space. I only referred to her as ‘Tu’ and had a loud tone. She then challenged me saying ‘I’ll click your picture and watch what will I do.” The situation may be a pretense and a fight for fame but the fact remains that the world tends to snooze and take cat naps when a woman needs help. This is where the social media steps in.

The social media promises justice to the harrowed women of today, they promise to bring the culprits to task. This incident highlights the fact that mute people eye witnessing eve teasing is a common sight. Remember the time, when a woman was teased aboard a Mumbai to Bhubaneshwar flight by a fellow passenger? The lady who had been touched purposely picked her smart phone and scolded the man, as she made his video. This video was then uploaded Eve-Teasing-jpgon the internet and the man booked for his misbehavior.

Another flight incident bought to notice was men clicking pictures of a woman feeding her child on the flight and they were also clicked ogling at the airhostess as she had bent down. The airhostess had taught them a lesson by clicking their pictures and tweeting them online. Similar incidents have been reported on buses and taxis too.  There have been innumerable occurrences that have not been bought to the notice of the media, but are a constant happening all around.

As the residents of the Nation walk into a deep slumber, the woman has raised her head and taken things into her own hands. They have approached the strongest medium of exposure –the internet, to teach these supposedly “harmless” guys a lesson.

Be careful before you whistle at that gorgeous girl passes you by, you may be in someone’s video and your parents and relatives may catch you eyeballing at the woman on the internet. You may come into the line of vision of your own Boss, and that can be very embarrassing if you are expecting your promotion within days. It’s the time of woman empowerment; they are taking things into their own hands, enough of waiting for the manly-protector to come her way!
