Fight disastrous fungal infection with honey-study
Fungal infections are known to cause havoc in people and the devastating infections can leave them struggling for recovery after a painful experience. One of these deadly funguses is Fusarium, which is said to be found in soil and on plants and this can cause disastrous infections in people with a vulnerable disposition. The fungus has been known to cause vision loss and even death in some. A medicinal type of honey has shown to cause destruction of this fungus, claims a new study.
Zain Habib Alhindi, from University of Manchester in UK, in a unique study process has made use of varying concentrations of a biologically engineered honey called Surgihoney to destroy the fungus Fusarium. This destruction was possible because of the chemically reactive molecules loaded with oxygen in this honey. The lowest concentrations of the honey showed breakdown of the fungus cell wall to a significant amount and this may spell a treatment for the patients affected by the fungus in future felt the scientists.
Alhindi stated “Chronic infections, such as those found in long-lasting wounds comprise about 60-80% of infectious diseases in humans and the way fungi invade wounds is associated with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.”
Claiming that honey may work better than antifungal treatments , She further gave a statement saying “However, we know that biofilms – thin layers of microorganisms, which group together – contribute to the severity and delayed healing of chronic wounds. Through my research I wanted to show the potential for honey as a healing agent to break through these biofilms and in doing so increase the process of healing.” The study has been awarded one of a kind study tag because not much research has gone into the effects of honey on pathogenic fungi.
