Zika virus spreads in Kerela

Kerela reported 13 cases of the zika virus on Thursday, during the struggle against covid19.

The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease. It is only transmitted by insects and animals.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys. It was later identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Outbreaks of Zika virus disease have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.

The Zika virus is carried by the Aedes mosquito, which attacks at all hours of the day and night. Dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever are all spread by the same species.

All of the samples were taken in Thiruvananthapuram, and they all came back positive. For testing, they were transferred to the National Institute of Virology (NIV).

In Kerala, the first case was discovered in a pregnant lady. Fever, red patches on the skin, and headaches were the symptoms. This condition can transfer from pregnant women to their fetuses, leading to birth abnormalities in offspring.

Symptoms:

The majority of people infected with the zika virus will experience no symptoms, but others may experience moderate symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Muscle pain

These signs and symptoms could last a few days or weeks. Zika virus-related deaths are extremely rare. The virus can stay in the bloodstream for several weeks. Consult your doctor if you experience any symptoms.

Prevention:

  • Prevent mosquito bites to protect yourself and others.
  • It can be transmitted during sexual activity, so take caution.
  • When going outside, make sure you are adequately clothed.
  • Stay away from flooded areas.
  • Take precautions to avoid mosquito bites when travelling.
  • Pregnant ladies must use extreme caution.

This virus does not have a specific treatment. According to WHO, research on a zika virus vaccine is currently ongoing.

The UN encourages people who have been infected with this virus to rest and drink plenty of fluids, as well as treat a fever with over-the-counter or basic medications.
